How To Make Healthy Homemade Dog Treats

This short video demonstrates how you can make healthy dog treats for your beloved pup. Sure you can buy dog treats from the store but making them at home has many benefits for your dog. Many brands of commercial treats are filled with preservatives to extend their shelf life, plus they are often made from fillers and byproducts rather than high quality ingredients. By making dog treats at home you can control what goes into the recipe thus ensuring that your pet is getting the nutrition he or she deserves. And this allows you to provide your pet with a tasty alternative to the usual doggie biscuit.

For this recipe, you will need the following ingredients:

1. 2 cups flour (whole wheat or unbleached is healthiest)
2. 1 cup old fashioned oats
3. 1/2 cup peanut butter (creamy or chunky)
4. 1 1/4 cup hot water
5. 1/3 cup wheat germ (or I prefer flaxseed)
6. Honey

Combine the flour, oats, peanut butter, wheat germ and hot water in a bowl and mix thoroughly. When done, set the dough onto a flat surface, roll with a rolling pin and cut with mini cookie cutters. Mix a small amount of honey with a tablespoon of water then glaze the top of the treats for a little sweetness. Place treats on an ungreased cookie sheet and bake in the oven at 350 degrees for approximately 30 minutes or until crispy. You can bake these treats at a lesser time and end up with soft treats or longer for crunchy treats.

Soft treats will only last for 1 week room temperature and the crunchy treats will last approximately 3 weeks in an airtight container at room temperature and a month in the refrigerator.
