Cuteness Overload: A Dog Sleeping With His Kittens (Video)

This video features Murkin just lazing around with his kittens. You can see that he is very patient with the cats – as one even stepped on his face! Or is he just too lazy to react?

Some dog breeds can adjust better to living with a cat in the house. Small and high strung dogs generally do not match up well with cats and the larger the dog, the gentler the personality and disposition. But this is just a generalization. Dogs and cats are individuals and have their own personality. Their attitude towards other pets depends on a lot of factors. If a cat and dog are raised together from day one, or at least early on, there is a very good chance that they will be lifelong buddies.

It’s important to have realistic expectations when introducing a new pet to a resident pet. When you introduce pets to each other, one of them may send “play” signals that can be misinterpreted by the other. You can expect mild forms of aggressive behavior, but don’t give it the opportunity to intensify. If either animal becomes fearful or aggressive, separate them immediately, and start over with the introduction process in a series of small, gradual steps.

It’s important to note that dogs can kill cats very easily, even if they’re only playing. Hunting dogs have an instinct to pick small animals up by the neck and give them a shake to break their neck! All it takes is one shake and the cat’s neck can break so you may want to keep your dog on-leash and with you whenever your cat is free in the house during the introduction process. Also be sure that your cat has an escape route and a place to hide if ever the dog decides to play chase.
