Well, as we all know, there are two kinds of dogs when it comes to walking on the leash: The ones that trot along happily beside you, “walking to heel” in an orderly fashion, and the ones that “take you for a walk” – pulling relentlessly and scrambling forwards as if their lives depended on it. Some dogs are so extreme in this behavior that they are virtually choking themselves on the leash, yet they persist. The secret is all in the training.
Although it might occasionally seem “useful” to have a dog that pulls you along (because they are doing some of the work for you!), this is far from ideal behavior of course. Also, when you encounter another dog along the way it will be harder to drag yours away and avoid an embarrassing situation or perhaps even a dust-up with another dog.
We dug around and found a great tutorial video from dog trainer Zak George. It’s a short 5-minute tutorial and is also highly rated with “thumbs up” by viewers.
Zak takes on the challenge of training a Pitbull, which are renowned for pulling like crazy. I very much like that this is an “intelligent” tutorial, which favors “teaching the dog to think” rather than using choke chains or harsh punishments. This is an excellent video! Just great! 🙂 He teaches consistency, engagement and patience – and you can see the results by the end.
Very helpful. Will definitely try!
