Oh, it’s your good old neighbor bringing along with her meat and noodles in a casserole dish. 😉 But before you set the knife aside in the kitchen or drop the paper and stand up to warmly greet your guest, your dog barks ardently and zooms from where it’s lying toward the door to attempt to jump on the person who is about to enter your household. Well, perhaps what happens next need not be told. Story ends.
A few dog owners more or less share the same scenario as above, and although our enthusiastic dogs apparently meant no harm or trouble in the first place, things can get messy, loud, or overwhelming, especially for any unprepared visitor who will probably be caught off guard. Apologetic as we are of what happened, most likely our dogs aren’t. And many owners simply think that “this is what dogs do” and that such behavior cannot be trained.
There are times as well when as soon as our canine pals hear the rattling sound of a doorknob, which is a cue that the door is about to be opened, our pooches quickly get to their feet and dash through the door. This can be frustrating naturally for those owners who prefer their dogs staying inside.
So is there a way to control your pooch from doing the habit? Of course there is! Remember that our dogs love to please us, and with the right training and reinforcement of good canine manners, your dog will learn there’s no need to rush and become worked up all of a sudden when a guest comes in.
