Dog Breeds 101: American Eskimo Dog

The cheerful, affectionate and smart American Eskimo Dog (nicknamed Eskie) is a devoted family member who loves to be the center of attention. These dogs are excellent companions and will always want to be part of every family activity. They are independent thinkers with an uncanny ability to solve problems. Generally, they are great family pets but they have the tendency to be rowdy sometimes. These dogs love participating in activities where they can use their minds such as obedience training, tricks and agility. Once, they were popular for being circus performers – Eskies used to travel the United States in the 19th century stunning audiences with their tricks. [1]

The America Eskimo Dog is a member of the Spitz family and is closely related to the white German Spitz. The dogs were first brought to the United States by German settlers and has nothing to do with the Eskimo culture despite their name. Mr. and Mrs. F.M. Hall were the ones who registered the breed in 1913. The couple had a kennel named “American Eskimo” which became the name of the breed. [2]

Originally, the dogs were bred to guard people and property. As a result, they can be quite territorial making them excellent watchdogs. However, this trait also makes them wary and distrustful towards unfamiliar people. They are not aggressive but can be vocal considering the breed’s watchdog history. Eskies tend to become overweight easily, so proper diet and exercise is needed to keep them healthy. This breed has an average lifespan of 12 to 15 years. [3] They can adapt well in a variety of homes – from apartments to large houses – as long as they are kept indoors. They are not suited to a life in the backyard and are happiest when they are around their family. [4]
