Pomeranians are considered to have descended from the Wolfspitzs which were large working dogs in the Artic regions. The breed acquired its name by association with the province Pomerania which is located in northern Poland and Germany along the Baltic Sea. The province is credited with the breeding which led to the original Pomeranian type of dog.
Early Pomeranians were large dogs weighing as much as 30 pounds. That all changed during the reign of Queen Victoria. During her 64 years as the Queen of England, she bred more than 15 different breeds of dogs and she was especially fond of Pomeranians. One of her favored dogs was a comparatively small red sable Pomeranian named Marco which was reported to weigh only 12 pounds. Marco went on to compete under the Queen’s name in many dog shows and won many honors. Many believe that Marco was the inspiration to breed smaller Pomeranians.
Today, Pomeranians typically weigh 3 to 7 pounds and can grow only up to 7 to 12 inches. However, some litters have puppies that are throwbacks to the days when they were much larger.
