This is a video of Maverick, a German Shepherd jumping in on some dolphins. Guess the dog just could not help himself but play with the dolphins!
German Shepherds are well known for their police work, being used for tracking criminals, patrolling troubled areas and in the detection and holding of suspects. Thousands of German Shepherds have been used by the military. They are usually trained for scout duty and are used to warn soldiers to the presence of enemies or of traps and other hazards.
In 1899, Max von Stephanitz was attending a dog show when he was shown a dog named Hektor Linksrhein. He was so pleased with the dog’s strength and was so taken by the animal’s intelligence, loyalty, and beauty that he purchased him immediately. After purchasing the dog he changed the name to Horand von Grafrath who was declared to be the first German Shepherd Dog.
The breed was named Deutscher Schäferhund by von Stephanitz, literally translating to “German Shepherd Dog”. They were so named due to their original purpose of assisting shepherds in herding and protecting sheep. However, at the conclusion of World War I, it was believed that the inclusion of the word “German” would harm the breed’s popularity, due to the anti-German sentiment of the era. The breed was officially renamed to “Alsatian Wolf Dog”. The name Alsatian remained until 1977, when successful campaigns by dog enthusiasts pressured the international kennel clubs to allow the breed to be registered again as German Shepherd Dogs.
