Great Danes are often referred to as the ‘Gentle Giants’ but no dog is born a giant. This video features Saki, Pearl and Marvin. They are Great Dane puppies who are only seven days old and they all look so tiny and cute! Like all puppies, they struggle with every move they make but luckily, their mother Tyla is always there to help.
Want to know more about Great Danes? Here are five facts about the breed:
1. Misleading name – Despite being called the Great Dane, these dogs did not originate from Denmark but from Germany. The term ‘Great Dane’ arose in the 1700s, when a French naturalist traveled to Denmark and saw the breed. He called them Grand Danois, which eventually became Great Danish Dogs. The name stuck, even though Denmark did not develop the breed.
2. They have one of the shortest lifespans of all dog breeds – As a general rule, the larger the dog the shorter time they live. Great Danes don’t live very long with an average lifespan of around eight years.
3. In olden days they were thought to ward off ghosts and evil spirits – It is believed that Great Danes were used to ward off evil spirits and ghosts in the late medieval times and thus were used to roam on their owners estates. Perhaps that’s why Scooby Doo is a Great Dane? 🙂
4. Lady’s dog – They might be huge but Great Danes are very sensitive and they do not respond well to hard correction or training methods. They work well with lady owners.
5. Tallest dogs – The world’s largest dog was a Great Dane named Zeus. He became the title holder in 2012 but sadly died so young at age six in 2014. Now, another Great Dane named Rocko is vying for the title. He is 167 pounds and stands seven feet tall on his hind legs!
