Cats and dogs are often thought born as natural enemies but this isn’t always the case. The video proves that as it shows cats and dogs cuddling like they’re best of friends!
The best shot for the two to get along is to get a cat and dog when they are both young. Puppies and kittens who grow up together are most likely to become buddies. But if you have an adult pet and you are planning in getting a dog or cat, make sure to do the following:
1. See to it that the cat can escape if needed – Cats are more likely to be hurt by dogs so make sure your cat has spots throughout the house where they can leap out of harm’s way.
2. Exchange scents – Rub a cloth on each pet and put it in the other’s hang-out spot. Keep doing this until neither of them gets overly excited or distressed by the other’s scent.
3. Introduce them through a door – Bring the dog and cat on opposite sides of a closed door and let them sniff under the door so they know that the other one is near. Lavish them both with praise and treats while doing this. You want them to think that good things happen when the other pet is around.
4. Leashed meeting – Allow both animals to be in the same room at the same time, but keep the dog securely leashed. Continue with this type of introduction until both are okay with the other’s presence. If there is any fear or aggression displayed on either animal’s part, do the previous step longer.
The key here is to go slowly. It is commonplace to see signs of fear and aggression at both animals but if you regularly do the steps stated above, your dog and cat will be able to coexist in peace.
