Corgis are one of the most popular breeds today and it’s not hard to see why. With that foxy face, short legs, and cute bunny butt, they are adorable as can be! Here are some fun facts about the breed:
1. There are two types of Welsh corgis: the Pembroke Welsh corgi and the Cardigan Welsh corgi. They are considered two entirely different breeds because they come from different ancestors. If you are confused which is which, the Pembroke corgi does not have a tail. Another difference is that Cardigan Welsh corgis have rounded ears, while Pembrokes generally have pointy ears.
2. Corgis were originally bred as herders. The Welsh used the short dogs as herders in the 10th century. In those days, pastures were considered common land, so there were no fences. In order to keep a farmer’s cattle together, corgis would nip at their legs to herd them.
3. In Welsh, “cor” means dwarf and “gi” means dog. So every time we speak the name of this breed we’re really saying “Dwarf Dog.”
4. They are great watchdogs, those oversized ears and big bark surely comes in handy for home protection.
5. Corgis have been part of the British Royal Family for over 70 years. Queen Elizabeth II has owned more than 30 Corgis since she was a young child. So in England, corgis are synonymous with royalty.
